Born in Khandra, Panipat district, Neeraj Chopra grew up in a modest family whose primary occupation was agriculture. However, modern sports were virtually nonexistent in his village and it was not until the age of thirteen that he discovered his passion for javelin throwing. Previously self-conscious about his weight, Neeraj's family initiated 'Operation Neeraj Fitness' and sent him to the Shivaji Stadium every day to engage in sports and lose weight. It was there that Neeraj first displayed his remarkable talent and became hooked on javelin throwing, much to the astonishment of older athletes who encouraged him to try it out.
