The Guide by R K Narayan

Upon Raju's release from prison, he immediately heads to the nearest barber shop before taking shelter in a deserted temple. Raju, a once corrupt tourist guide, is mistaken for a holy man by a peasant and reluctantly takes on the role. To his surprise, he excels in his newfound sanctity and even garners the attention of God, who challenges Raju to prove his purity.
