Despite being loved, Kaya's worth and purpose are questioned as she reaches forty and struggles with a past filled with lost loves. In an attempt to find purpose elsewhere, she becomes enraptured with activism and fighting against fascist and Islamophobic forces in present-day India, only to realize that her middle-class activism may be driven by a collective saviour complex. Despite this, Kaya finds herself deeply in love with a fellow activist from the very religious community that is being erased, aligning her twin purposes and causing her to fear losing everything. As she witnesses both great suffering and profound joy, Kaya must make a difficult decision between choosing love, which may betray her beliefs, or continuing to fight for her ideals. Told through various lenses, including urban myths and past lovers, The Girl Who Kept Falling in Love explores the complexities of seeking love and acceptance while chasing global aspirations and battling institutionalized hate.
