Hugh Small, a renowned social historian and political economist, previously had a successful career in the industry after graduating with honours in physics and psychology from Durham University. He then became the principal network architect for the world's first commercial internet, the SITA multi-airline reservations network, from 1976 to 1981. Later, he joined two US strategic management consulting firms, Arthur D. Little and A.T. Kearney, as a partner from 1983 to 1998. However, in 1998, Small shifted his focus to research Victorian social reform, which led to the publication of his acclaimed works, including Florence Nightingale, Avenging Angel and The Crimean War. His revised biography of Florence Nightingale will be available in the summer of 2017, revealing new evidence about Nightingale's role in the sanitation revolution, which greatly impacted the national life expectancy in the 1870s.
